A thought for the future after yesterdays rout. Yesterday while handing out palm cards for Jaime Kemmerer I got into a discussion with a conservative Republican. He of course spoke about free-loafers on the public dole that dont pay taxes. I then asked him: If a child, through no fault of her own, is born to a young mother with little education, no significant work history, and an absentee father, what is our societys responsibility for that child? For a moment, and before reverting to the usual conservative arguments, he instinctually said, of course we have to help that child! When I have asked that question of conservatives, 99 times out 100, they quickly respond out of empathy not ideology. How do we capture that instinctual empathetic moment in terms of our public policy? A political party that can bring out the best instincts, the basic fairness and humanity of the great majority of Americans can be successful in 2016. Democrats have failed miserably over the last 6 years in understanding this and paid the price in 2010 and yesterday. Fire the political consultants and meet the American people. As a political party you forgot what we are about.
