A thought has just occurred. For people who believe the Bible and trust God through Jesus Christ, it seems were at a crossroads of thinking. Should we be involved in whats going on now politically and internationally? Should we speak out? Or should we simply pray and ask God that our leaders would do the right thing, while being personally charitable and humanitarian through church and social efforts? Here is my thought. I know that with only about 260 friends, this is probably not going to make much of a dent. But here goes (with apologies to those who think and write much better than I do). As Jesus instructed us, we should render unto Caesar what belongs to him...and unto God what belongs to Him. In America, all citizens are empowered with broad and deep responsibilities toward our Caesars, more so than in most countries in all history. For Christians, responsibilities toward God should come first, always. As one example, we shouldnt neglect our tithe if our tax burden becomes overwhelming (which it may). Our Caesar-responsibilities should be fully informed by our responsibilities toward God. That means we inform ourselves, vote, speak out, and hold accountable. If that werent the case, we wouldnt have a David Greene of Hobby Lobby stepping up to challenge the entire nation about what our rights of religion and conscience are under the Constitution. Jesus used a coin that He got out of the mouth of a fish to illustrate this simple principle. Were supposed to pay taxes. How did the coin get in the mouth of the fish? Evidently, if we put God first and then dont neglect our Caesar-responsibilities, God will provide for both. That is part of how God works in the world.
