A time to remember, and a time to forget. Long ago in ancient Japan, after long months of rain, the river separating a small village from a monastery nearby was in full spate. Two monks decided to cross the river to go to their monastery from the village they were in. As they were about to cross, a woman rushed to them, asking them to help her cross. The older monk refused, saying that it is a sin to look at women. The younger monk, however, asked the woman to hop on, and carried her on his shoulders across the river. After accepting her tearful thanks, the monks moved on. At the gate of the monastery, the older monk said angrily, Young Brother, you committed a great sin. How do you plan to repent? The younger monk took off his muddy sandals and entered the monastery, saying, I have left my sin behind at the bay of the river, Older Brother. When will you be free of the ghosts of my sins?
