A tip for the producers (but you can read it even if youre not a producer). This is one that was given to me early on and I am still exploring the many ways of applying this to the music I write. Think about contrast. If you are working on a sound that you want to be aggressive, or melodic, or tough, or gentle, then think about the other sounds around it. For instance a gnarly punchy bass sound will sound a lot gnarlier and punchier if the other sounds around it are more restrained and rounded. If EVERY sound in a song is the most aggressive sound ever they will all lose their impact very quickly. Similarly if you want a middle, melodic section of a song to burst through like sunshine, then look at the section before and make sure it provides a contrast to that. If you are DJing think about how one bass heavy track will have much impact after a more melodic track, and vice versa. This works with trends too. Trap and deep house are both different ways of reacting to the aggression of dubstep (or brostep) and electro house. Light and dark. High frequencies and low frequencies. Wet and dry sounds. Major and minor chords. There are many ways to create contrast. What are some other ways you can incorporate contrast?
