A tornado has affected Churriana and Torremolinos today The storm started at 5am this morning and according to sources at the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) the tornado was produced between 7am and 8am The security councillor in the Málaga City Hall, Julio Andrade, said the first information he had was the tornado appeared in the area of Playamar, where large trees, lampposts and pergolas were brought down. The damage was clearly seen in the buildings near the beach. The only chiringuito to be hit by the tornado was El Copacabana. The owner of the business Salvador García said ’20 years of my life gone in five minutes’. He employed 12 workers and hopes for compensation from the Chiringuito Partnership. Later the tornado was reported to be in the avenida de Coín and the avenida García, where serious damage was done to the roof of the BP petrol station, three cars and in another 17 vehicles which were in a nearby hotel car park. The City Hall on their twitter account said the tornado had blown some 30 trees and the municipal parks service was on alert and Torremolinos Town Hall thought as many as 100 trees had been blown down. In Torrox there was a spectacular hailstorm, which thankfully caused little damage. Technicians from the AEMET went to investigate the centre of the tornado to measure the damage caused and to confirm it was indeed a tornado. They concluded the tornado came ashore on the Playamar beach in Torremolinos, and then advanced for four kilometres to an area near the airport. Source: Typically Spanish
