A traitors death, a lesson about Esat Pasha Toptani. * Esat Pasha was assassinated by Avni Rustemi in Paris because he attempted to stronghold the government by force.* Esat Pasha was buried in the Serbian Military Cemetery in Paris due to the fact that no one would claim him and allow him to be buried in their cemetery. Esat Pasha had a reputation as an unscrupulous opportunist and is remembered among Albanians as one of the most negative historical figures and the symbol of treason. Edith Durham viewed Esat Pasha as a strange relic of the middle ages who sold himself and his services to the rival monarchs and cheerfully transferred themselves to the enemy if he offered better pay. His sense of nationality was not developed at all, and whose sense of honor was, to put it mildly, deficient. Avni Rustemi assassinated Esat Pasha in Paris. Although living in Paris and away from legislative governing of Albania, Esat Pasha claimed to still be the ruler of the state and attempted to represent Albania in the Paris Peace Conference. The governmental delegation didnt permit him to do so as they were going to represent Albania themselves. The assassination was largely seen as a heroic act as it has historically been seen as a signal of a new revolution against the feudal traditions of Albania and a crossing bridge in the newly democratic values.
