A tribute for Lis from Edward Russell, Brand manager of Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures (2006 to present). When you lose someone suddenly you can’t help but regret the things you never said. I often wonder if Lis realised just what a wonderful actor she was. I’ll never forget a particular incident when I reminded her of this. I had given Lis the fantastic news that Sarah Jane had topped the DWM readers poll in 2009 as Best Companion. “Really ?” she said, “Fancy that - best classic companion ?” I pointed out that it was for the entire series, not just the old days. “But what about Billie ? The kids adore Rose Tyler,” she replied. As far as she was concerned I had made an error. I told her there was no mistake. In fact, DWM wanted to present her with an award at a photoshoot in London. “But surely Sarah Jane isn’t as popular as Donna. Catherine Tate is absolutely incredible.” “Oh Lis.” I replied, “You do realise that you’re absolutely incredible too !” It was part of Lis’ charm that she was so modest.
