A tribute to my mom on her birthday. April 7, 2014 Dear Mom, I’ve been missing you so much lately. Spring time. Dad always picked bouquets for my birthday from the Robison Mansion where he worked. Five days later for your birthday, he picked another dozen tulips, daffodils, and gave them to you in bed, with a cup of coffee. That’s the kind of man he was, but that he did this for you, says what kind of woman you were. April always brings memories of you and Dad. I can see you in the kitchen cooking, smoking, drinking, cussing. I see you watching soap operas on tv and ironing for hours. I see you at the kitchen table with your sister and her husband and Dad, playing cards, drinking beers, smoking, dancing, laughing. I remember you working at the Silver Grill and Bar and grilling cheeseburgers for us. I choose to remember you alive and vibrant, healthy and full of piss and vinegar. I remember you always saying, “Are you gonna’ eat that shit, or what?” You made me laugh by just being yourself. You were smart but only had an eighth grade education. What could you have changed in the world if you had the chance to go to college as I did. You were beautiful with Navajo and Apache features, dark as night hair and eyes, your skin like coco. Even after your nose was broken, you were gorgeous, it just made you look tough. You loved to fight. You taught me how to stand up for myself and never give up. I’m not going to be sad today. I’m going to celebrate your life, I’m going to dance, cook, garden, sing, write, and pick a bouquet of tulips for your grave and miss you until I take my last breath. I saw you take your last breath on Earth, but I now see you laughing and smiling and dancing with Dad in Heaven. Viva, Eloisa Evelyn Mondragon Aragon. 1923-2009.
