A trumpet once owned, played and recorded by Doc Severinsen is among the NMMs many celebrity instruments. This gold-plated, model 54 Bel Canto trumpet by Severinsen-Akright Inc. of Oakland, California (1986) was formerly owned by Severinsen and used in his recordings of the Tonight Show Band, Vols. I and II (1986-1987). Vol. I, incidentally, won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Big Band, in 1987. The custom-built, Bel Canto line was developed in collaboration with Severinsen who wrote in a letter of authenticity accompanying this trumpet that this is an exceptional horn that I wish I still had (10 January 1992). The NMMs Bel Canto trumpet is one of the many gems to be found in the NMMs Joe R. and Joella F. Utley Collection.
