A trustworthy leader fosters hope and engenders reliability in the workplace. Colleagues know they can count on the leader, and the leader also relies on subordinates. Aneil and Karen Mishra, in their paper “Positive Organizational Scholarship and Trust in Leaders,” propose that an ideal leader demonstrates compassion, competence, openness, and humility. Citing our research (Nielsen, Marrone, and Slay 2010) Mishra and Mishra quote our definition of humility as “a desirable personal quality reflecting the willingness to understand the self (identities, strengths, limitations), combined with perspective in the self’s relationships with others.” A humility-based leader is aware of strengths and vulnerabilities within themselves, as well as the organization, and seeks honest feedback from others as to how they and the organization can perform better.
