A twisted tale. I am sure that you will recognise one of these images - yes, it’s the famous early musette de cour in the Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum. This is one of the instruments from Will Cocks’ collection but in earlier days it had belonged to a wealthy collector called Charles van Raalte of Brownsea Island, Dorset. Van Raaltes daughter Margherita, a gifted soprano, was married to Tommy Scott-Ellis who later became the 8th Baron de Walden. That family still own huge estates in the West End of London. As a young man Scott-Ellis was driving what was probably a rather expensive car in Munich and ran over a pedestrian called Adolf Hitler. No serious injuries resulted but if he had been going faster, subsequent history might have been significantly different.
