A typical Friday morning in Agra, India. Kusuma and her family - TopicsExpress

A typical Friday morning in Agra, India. Kusuma and her family live just steps away from the Taj Mahal, but their slum sits in another world altogether. Our visit to her home was a real happening in the neighborhood and her family treated Dan Videtich and me to tea as treasured guests. Most family members work hard as day laborers to make ends meet. They are trying to save enough to replace the roof on their small, 2 room home. Kusumas older children help their mother in a way that was quite touching as they did daily laundry and dishes. Later, Kusuma changed into the green sari that signifies her membership in the Unbound mothers group and introduced us to her youngest son Alok, who is a sponsored child. He is doing well in school and as you can see, Kusuma is proud of him. Education is the path out of poverty for children everywhere. I believe Alok will go far-in part because of the incredible dedication and persistence of his mom. It was an honor to spend the morning with her family.
