A unique valedictory function was held at the campus of Delhi Public School, Bangalore-North, recently to celebrate the achievements of 16 of its students, who teamed up with students from the Nikolaus Kopernikus Gymnasium (NKG) in Weissenhorn, Germany, to bag the support of the Robert Bosch Stiftung Foundation for their project- ’Peaceful Revolution’. The two teams overcame stiff competition from nearly 60 other schools from across the world and were only among 15 other institutions to receive the prestigious Foundation’s backing. In March 2012, 16 students from classes 9 and 10 of DPS North were selected on the basis of their academic and extra-curricular performance and interest in global issues and sent to Germany. “India’s non-violent freedom struggle and the peaceful demonstrations that resulted in the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 were the central theme,” said Renu Dimri, headmistress, DPS North. She added that DPS made necessary arrangements for the team, including provision of visas, tickets and health insurance. Powerpoint presentations that were made in India were demonstrated in Germany, recalled Rajeshwari, a class 09 teacher at DPS. “The presentations broke the characteristic silence of German school hallways,” she revealed. At the event, students from DPS and NKG worked together on eight presentations through which they expressed their views on the similarities and differences between Indian and German cultures. “The students also began practicing really hard for the Germans’ visit to India in September,” Dimri added. During the valedictory function, the German students danced and sang songs even as the DPS children and teachers wore khadi, representing Indian culture.
