A university don, Prof P.O. Ikoya has decried the bastardized democratic culture in the country and the gradual eroding-away of the principles of liberty and true freedom of association for Nigerians. Prof. Ikoya, speaking during the 14th convocation lecture at the College of Education, Agbor, Delta State, said that the principles of democracy have being overtaken by culture of selfish gains and all associated ugly vices characterizing Nigerian democracy. He said that Nigerian citizens have been denied the fundamentals of democracy and students have now embraced the ugly culture as a way of life. This ugly culture, Prof. Ikoya said, has brought about anger and frustration in the land, religious intolerance and ethnic squabbles, all militating against the educational development in the country. Prof. Ikoya, who chaired the convocation lecture, said that the ugly development has given room for all manners of thuggery on highways and the extortions of innocent Nigerians, whom he said remain helpless to the unfortunate situation. He said that majority of Nigerians are in prisons today, prisons without walls, owing to the culture of impunity and undemocratic principles that have crept into the society. He advocates that the principles of democracy must be respected by all and the fundamental principles of freedom of association for Nigerians must be guaranteed. While calling for the sustenance of quality education in the country, he advised that it is imperative that Nigerian students should keep in mind that those who succeed academically succeed in life.
