A valiant effort on Saturday by the 2nd XV, but sadly High Wycombe IVs came out the victors once again. Egham Hollowegians took the lead midway through the first half when the ball went loose at the breakdown, allowing Dave Kelly to expose a huge gap in the oppositions defence and feed Ash Dixon for the opener. High Wycombe responded with a try of their own, as they created a five on three overlap, leaving things all square at half time. The message from Captain Hugh Strivens at the break was to play smarter, commit less to the breakdown, and run with the ball in hand. The lead was regained early in the second half following a bizarre looped ball which saw a huddle of players competing in the air within the High Wycombe in-goal area. Fortunately, jumper Iain Greig was on hand to knock the ball back to Dave Kelly, who placed the ball down for one of the easiest tries hell ever score. As in the first half though, High Wycome came back and took the lead with a converted try, giving our opponents a narrow two-point advantage. Solid phase play from the backs enabled James Crabb to score his first try for the club, with a 50 yard dash, including some good footwork to beat the fullback. Unfortunately though, it wasnt to be Egham Hollowegians day, with High Wycombe scoring late on. The conversion took them four points ahead, and despite several penalties within kick-able range, our push for a winning fourth try proved fruitless. That said, lots of positives to take from the game, including stellar performances from Dan Hoyle at second row / tight head, Dominic Howell at fullback and his second-half replacement Francis Morris, who is now rumored to have played all 15 positions in XVs rugby!
