A very compelling article. I do believe we would get better quality high school teachers (not that all are bad, mind you) willing to stay in the field and put in the long hours required if the pay was doubled. I started at $21,425 20 years ago and am topped out at $55,000. It used to be that the compensation for that was the benefits. Not so much anymore. It also used to be that you could get full retirement after 30 years. Not now. I will be teaching until I am 65 if I want a full retirement. There needs to be more incentives to teach if we want the high quality educators willing to put in the 60 plus hours a week and live with the constant stress of getting their students to pass the high stakes tests now required and part of teachers evaluations.
