A very critical issue. The money to support the programs has to come from somewhere, but with rents going up each year, this will seriously effect those who are experiencing longer-term hardships. The proposal is called Stepping Forward. It would increase rents gradually over the next several years for homes with at least one person between the ages of 24 and 61 thats able to work, administrators said. Tenants currently pay about 30 percent of their income on rent, administrators said. Under the proposal, rents would instead be based off the size of the unit and how long the tenants have lived there, they added. For example, an affected family living in a two bedroom unit could pay about $160 for rent each month during the 1st year, $360 each month during the 2nd and 3rd years, $560 each month during the 3rd and 4th years, and $850 each month during the 6th year, administrators said. [...] Three more public meetings about the proposal are planned through the end of September: September 22nd at the Rainier Community Center on 38th Avenue South, September 23rd at the NewHolly Gathering Hall on 32nd Avenue South, and on September 29th at the High Point Community Center on 34th Avenue Southwest. All of the meetings begin at 6 p.m.
