A very important factor in muscle hypertrophy is mechanical - TopicsExpress

A very important factor in muscle hypertrophy is mechanical tension, just think of it as tension through the muscle your working when you lift. If you lift with too heavy and are reduced to a shorter range of motion you wont be placing tension through the whole muscle. You may also take some tension off the main muscle as other muscle step in to help out so you dont get stuck under the bar. Less tension on the muscle leads to less hypertrophy. So while you think moving a heavy ass weight a few inches makes you look good in the gym, it wont make you look good on the beach. (It doesnt make you look good in the gym either but hey) Focus on choosing a weight that is difficult but allows you to keep tension on the target muscle through a full range of motion with good form.
