A very inspiring lady. Met her first time during a JCMA Winter Conference in 2010. Last month she came to Minaret College to gave a talk on cyberbullying. During Q&A, one student asked about her hijab while in uniform. She explained it was a challenge at first but that didnt hinder her from fulfilling her duties and getting national recognition for her outstanding work. Maha grew up in Beirut and spent most of her childhood surviving a war torn country and volunteering as an ambulance officer. She arrived in Australia in 2000 on a skilled migrant visa and joined the Victoria Police in 2004, becoming the first sworn officer to wear a traditional Muslim hijab as part of her uniform. Maha currently works in the Victoria Police Multicultural Liaison unit and has received 8 awards for her policing work including, Australasian Council for Women and Policing Bravery Award and Australian Muslim Woman of the Year Award. Maha’s story is one of strength, determination and compassion. theage.au/news/National/Making-hijab-part-of-Victoria-Police-uniform/2004/11/26/1101219743263.html
