A very interesting article from Reason says that military service members are increasingly moving toward libertarianism. It quotes data showing high levels of support among active-duty personnel for gays in the military, low levels of support for the two major parties, and increasing numbers of troops identifying as independent or libertarian as evidence of this shift. The article also points out that Ron Paul had raised more money from active-duty servicemembers and Pentagon employees than any of the other Republican candidates for president during his primary run in 2012. In fact, he took in more than four times the COMBINED take of the other three Republican presidential candidates, and more than twice as much as President Obama did during that time. The big question is, why? A separate article from Mother Jones asked veterans that question. Most responded that they liked Pauls libertarian stance against big government and his anti-interventionist beliefs. And they also indicated that being libertarian doesnt mean being against defense, but rather it means being against the type of military adventurism that Bush and Obama undertook. Either way, its certainly surprising at least to me that members of the military are so libertarian.
