A very mild rant(ish) commentary on KU. I get asked all the time what us authors think of KU. I honestly have no idea what other authors think of it, but although Im not happy with KU, but I am grudgingly accepting the yolk of servitude Amazon is placing on our necks. You cant beat them. I see amazing books by well known authors selling like 600 books in two days and only reaching the 2000s on Amazon ranks because theyre 1) full price, and 2) not in KU. I then see pretty meh books cranked out by people nobody has heard of hitting the top 100 overall with barely 1000 sales in a week because 1) theyre 99 cents and 2) theyre in KU. KU books are weighted very heavy in Amazons logarithms. Until this changes, I will have to play along. PS By pretty meh I mean clearly not edited or formatted properly, like the author just phoned it in. Im not begrudging anyone making it high on Amazon ranks, thats not what the comment is about, Im begrudging a system that gives greater weight to KU books in Amazons ranking algorithms and promotional packages. They want KU books to rank high, more people will sign up for KU if there are bestsellers on there. Amazon makes more money with KU books, us authors arent even sure month to month how much theyll pay us for each borrow. For more information, heres a test done in Germany. selfpublisherbibel.de/test-how-amazons-algorithms-really-work-myth-and-reality/
