A very moving question into the #Civilities mailbag. Whats been your experience at doctors offices when the questions render you or your relationships invisible? What do you do? Choose the best answer? Write in your own? Complain? Let me know below. Thanks. For the past 25 years Ive been living, successfully and pleasantly for the most part, back home in the extremely rural and conservative South where I grew up. One of the petty annoyances has been the health-history questionnaires one has to fill out in doctors’ offices. Its not that I hide my nature or situation from a physician: they are all aware that I’m gay and had a long time partner. I don’t mind telling the truth about health matters, but I always hesitate over the marital status questions: your choices basically are married, divorced, widowed, single. My state even now is one of those that forbid gay marriage. Historically, I tended to check single since that is what I was legally in my state. But I wasn’t single. Married didn’t seem to fit because we were never married in the eyes of the law. Most recently the matter came up again, although my partner is now deceased. This time I checked widowed. Then I started fretting about that. What box do you think I should have checked?
