A very real and more imperative danger in our societies is the decadence of the family set-up. This is something hardly discussed in our day to day lives, at schools, on the media. With decreasing respect for elders and parents, lack of parenting skills, increased mistrust and lack of open communication between spouses, the significant increase in divorces and messy aftermaths, etc, we can say that one of the main problems is a lack of education and a lack of proper role-modelling. We do not know who to look up to and who we should regard as personalities of emulation when it comes to being a good wife, good husband, good son, good daughter, good brother and sister, good mother and good father, good friend, and good citizen of the world. Today, the 1st of the last month in the Islamic calendar, Dhil Hijjah, marks the marriage anniversary of Imam Ali ibn Abi Taleb and Fatima Zahra. If more people, whether they already know of them or not, research more about these two personalities lives, they will be in awe of how amazing these personalities were and subsequently have no choice but to regard them as one of the best people worthy of emulation and imitation. And then if we make a commitment to at least try to emulate and follow them as much as we can, and hold them as examples and benchmarks of our own actions, then indeed we will be on the path of strengthening our family set-ups and consequently becoming a stronger and more advanced civilisation. May this beautiful occasion prompt us towards that.
