A very rough cut of a new song Im working on, called The Friends of the People, about the 5 political martyrs that were members of the Edinburgh Society For the Friends of the People, a group of individuals in Scotland inspired by the principles of government and liberty found in Thomas Paines Rights of Man and the American and French Revolutions. They demanded Parliamentary reform and fought for the rights of all Scots in Scotland and in so doing for the everyone around the world. They were ultimately arrested, tried by the British government for sedition and sentenced to the penal colony in New South Wales, which is today Australia. Thomas Muir, perhaps the most known of the 5, escaped with the aim of going to the United States, but was taken captive by the Spanish in what is today California, and eventually landing in France, where he died. You can read about them here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_of_the_Friends_of_the_People en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_Martyrs_Monument en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Muir_of_Huntershill Lyrics: -There were 5 political martyrs arrested and shipped far away All the way to what is now Australia Exiled for sedition they say Their only crime was to fight for The rights of the Scots of their day And demand Parliamentary reform To ensure right equalitee (equality) They paid the price for freedom, That all men who fight for it do A thing so dear, they didn’t fear To end their lives for you Chorus: Oh let’s praise the Friends of the People Let’s toast to their memories dear For their fight ‘gainst despotic gov’ment That rules by injustice and fear
