A very rude friend just asked me, Since you have cancer, why dont you just go around bald? Dont be embarrassed, girl! Its the in thing these days- dont be so vain! After I cussed her ass out for being so rude and shallow, I told her the following: Im in no way ashamed of my bald head, nor am I embarrassed. I keep my baldness covered for two reasons: my job and my children. Now, as you read this, dont think Im knocking ANYONE!!! Id NEVER, EVER do that!! My job is about capturing the most fantastic memories of your lives. Many times, Im just a background observer, not the main attraction. Simply put, a bald photog at your event would attract attention. Shooting a toddler is difficult enough without having to explain my appearance to them. When you hire me, I dont want the focus to be on my illness at all. And my children are soldiers right along with me- every step I go through, they go through it all with me. A teenager can hardly handle it all, let alone a 9yr old and a 5yr old. My girls and I are a team against this shit, but they dont get it all- hell, I dont get it all! Jaydaci doesnt really get why Im bald and she shouldnt have to try to explain it to others. Im happy to say that because of the way I chose to handle this, my girls, along with my clients, tend to forget that I have brain cancer and Im perfectly ok with that. I dont hide my illness, but I dont want it to deter people- and it does. Ive actually lost clients who were worried Id die before their session, causing them to lose their deposit! (Yes, I get that type of crap!!) I dont want to be known as that photog with cancer or that dance mom with cancer. Trust me- Im sure Ill give you lots of other stuff to remember me by lol!
