A very true and important concept for athletes and trainers. Too - TopicsExpress

A very true and important concept for athletes and trainers. Too often I see people performing exercises that are well beyond their limit or capacity. Every exercise program should begin with a functional movement assessment and then tailor each workout to that individuals ability. A few days ago I allowed one of my athletes to do box jumps for the first time after several months of training. Not because he was unable to perform the movement, but because he was unable to perform the movement without compensation. My initial evaluation pointed out several areas of concern. Mainly knee and hip stability problems. When he performs any type of lunge or squat motion his right knee caves in which often results in tearing of the ACL, MCL or meniscus in the knee joint. So for about two months we simply focused on developing his balance and stability in single leg stance and avoided any jumping or plyometric exercises. Now that his balance as well as core and hip stability are where they need to be, we can begin to implement power and plyometric exercises like box jumps. I could have had this athlete doing box jumps much earlier but in my opinion the potential risk of injury far exceeded the benefits of such exercises. If you have any questions on whether or not a specific exercise is right for you, please feel free to contact me. ChiropracticMovement
