A very welcome and long overdue move from Facebook on this. On the basis of mutual understanding, there are great positives in this move. From my own experience, schools, teachers and parents react to the issue of online safety in a very emotive way, and on the whole , such reactions are based in fear and a lack of control in the online arena. Facebook , as a company , on a simplistic basis have been reserved in their approach to interaction, I assume out of an issue of resources and logistics, but mainly not wishing to open themselves to liability. With the meeting of the two, hopefully an effective 2 way communication line, engendering swift. calm and targeted action will be of huge benefit to those student who are facing the ordeal of cyber-bullying. My overarching observation on this is simple, although this has been couched as a victory for the Department of Education and Skills, it most certainly is not. Thisis an opportunity. It is an opportunity for them to learn and to adapt, and is is equally an opportunity for Facebook to gain an opportunity to calm the rhetoric and reactionary actions of teacher and parents alike. I for one will be watching this space very closely!
