A very young Theodore Roosevelt was crossing the Atlantic Ocean - TopicsExpress

A very young Theodore Roosevelt was crossing the Atlantic Ocean 145 years ago right now. Earlier in the week the entire Roosevelt family had boarded the “Scotia”--pride of the Cunard Line--for a Grand Tour of Europe. They first stopped in Liverpool to see young Theodores uncles. Four years after Appomattox James and Irvine Bulloch were still prohibited from returning to the United States due to their Confederate ties. In Rooseveltian fashion the family stayed busy. They visited most of Britain and eventually crossed the Channel to tour the Continent. The family visited Europe’s capitols and enjoyed the beautiful countryside as well. All of ten, little Teedie hiked up to twenty miles a day in the Swiss Alps later in the summer. This was before he turned eleven in October. He capped off the year by climbing Mount Vesuvius on 31 December. The Roosevelts returned home in May 1870 and settled back in to their home here on East 20th Street.
