A village market in Ha Giang, in Vietnams northern most province bordering Yunnan in China. Ha Giang has a very porous border with China, so the Vietnamese and Chinese authorities are not so keen for tourists to venture there. But with the right connections, we wandered at will, into forbidden villages and even getting invited into homes. The karst landscape is spectacular, as is the rich rural kaleidoscope. The unknowing will usually go to Sapa, about 300 km to the west of Ha Giang, but Sapa has been thoroughly spoilt, where even little children will ask for the familiar one dollar if you so much as lift your camera and point in their direction.
