A virtual tour of Penns Common/ City Park takes us to the intersection of Perkiomen Ave and Hill Road. The Turtle Fountain was donated by the Eagle Marble Works of Reading in 1878 and sculpted by Herman Strecker. This is the only remaining fountain ( although presently non functioning) of three donated to the City of Reading by area businesses in 1878 in response to citizens efforts to beautify the park. The fountains design was done in the romantic rustic style, so popular in the late 19th century.the sculpture depicts fern covered rocks, a frog,an alligator, and a turtle at the very top. Present day the turtle is missing its head and the marble is starting to erode.
