A warm and loud welcome in the beautiful hills of Gitega this morning. The Burundi Leadership Training Program (BLTP) hosted the official opening of the 2nd phase of its ‘Ecole de la Démocratie’ program. BLTP invited its partners, the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and the Dutch embassy, to join the official launch. Mr. Veenis, head of our political office, held a speech and welcomed the participants who were also attending the opening. These ‘Schools for Democracy’ aim to raise awareness in communities about the fact that security is an issue affecting everyone. It tries to reduce distrust and enhance collaboration between the police and the community. BLTP tries to realize these goals by providing courses and training to all stakeholders. Police officers, local leaders and community people transform into students during these meetings. The ‘students’ learn how to collaborate, listen to each other and to search for solutions. Not solutions written in a book, but solutions that are contrived during group discussions. ‘Schools for Democracy’ truly proves its democratic value to the participants.
