A waterspout was reported offshore Cocoa Beach around 8:20 pm this evening. We spotted the funnel cloud from our radar tower and snapped a few photographs before it dissipated (it was about 15 miles northeast of us at the time). DID YOU KNOW? Research from Dr. Joe Golden in the late 1960s showed that winds in excess of ~ 43 knots were needed for a spray ring to develop in a waterspout. Pictures sent to us on social media indicate the waterspout had a well developed spray ring!
