A week after the catastrophe happened in Uttarakhand. T he authorities and official agencies are still misleading people by limiting the numbers of the people died to 1,000-1,500. Eyewitnesses from that very place where cloud had brusted saying that around hundreds of villages have been drowned in the flash flood caused by the landslides. Actual numbers of the people died are beyond imagination. According to a rough estimation based upon the statements of the eyewitnesses, more than 30,000 people are dead; numbers of the people missing are still unknown. This is the condition of the hills, in Uttarakhand. Moreover, in the plains, the floods have left several thousand traumatized. Many villages and structures have been swept away. According to a victim he had a family of 6 members and had 80 cattles. His family members, along with cattles have been swept away by the flood water, within a minute. Hundreds of villages in Haridwar, Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar districts had been devastatingly struck by the flood water. Deadbodies can be seen rotting in the jungles, floating above waters, in the villages. It is almost impossible to gauge the exact extent of destruction, everyone is guessing the number of deaths. From a couple of hundreds to the Uttarakhand CM’s estimate and a thousand to the state’s disaster management minister, death toll can rise up to any unimaginable figure. Anyone can claim any number and the sad part is all of them are shooting in the dark. For, the truth is we will never really know the exact number of people who died. via Ayaz Farooqui
