A week ago, I had to leave a very special return trip to NECON - TopicsExpress

A week ago, I had to leave a very special return trip to NECON because Abby Kennedy Lucia was having an emergency appendectomy. She was dealing with the pain and what to do with the kids while I was six hours away. I was grappling with the guilt of not wanting to leave NECON and my NEED to get home to my wife. A friend made an amazingly generous offer and GAVE me his car. I drove six hours home in time for the surgeon to walk into the waiting room and say, She made it through fine. Big sigh of relief all around. Then the aftermath, which neither of us were thinking about in the wake of the surgery: Abby would be out of work for nearly two weeks on disability, which pays very little. As a teacher at a private school, I dont get paid over the summer. And wed just tapped all our resources buying the new van. Until her disability kicked in, we had nine bucks in the bank. I had a garage full of scrap metal (which I collect every summer for vacation) and nothing else. Were on top of our bills. Mostly. There were more immediate concerns. Like groceries for the next few weeks. Garden is going strong, so in a few weeks, veggies. But main course stuff? Abby shares a post about her concerns. A friend messages theyve just gone vegetarian and have an entire freezer full of meat theyre not going to eat. Said friend GIVES US entire freezer full of meat, which will carry us well into late September (when I start getting paid again) and probably beyond. Then we receive an email from Zacks special service coordinator (hes autistic). Were offered free family passes to the local fair. I thought the passes were good for only one ride each only, but I figured: Hey, free fair is free fair. When we get there, we learn the passes are good for as many rides as we want, all night long. We stayed there until 9:30 last night, and the kids had a blast. We usually can never afford that long a stay - plus dinner - at the fair. Im writing this a week after life sucked, big time. But Im also writing it after a friend gave me his car when no other options existed, after a friend watched the kids when I brought Abby home, after a friend GAVE US a freezer full of meat, and after we got free tickets for something the kids love. Because of all this, the scrap metal can still be reserved for our vacation to see family down south. Take this for what you will. You all know I dont believe in coincidences, and I feel the same about this past week. However, it could also simply be real proof that even though the world abounds with idiots, good people who want to do good things for others still exist. Either way, Facebook is full of enough negativity, so heres something to counter that. End overly optimistic post dripping with good will.
