A week ago at Poetry in the Park I read a poem that I had written for Mashed Poetics. trance dance was in part inspired by a chat with Joanne Arnott re Katherena Vermettes wonderful book titled North End Love Songs. I too am a Winnipeger but did not grow up in the North End. None the less I experienced the push and pull of the borders between the North End and the downtown nightlife a place where need meets want. Like many poems it is a compilation of many contemplations. It is a nod to how we seek wholeness or spirituality in the wrong places sometimes because what is offered feels close to the real thing or for a moment it touches our spirit e.g. trance dance on the disco dance floor. Our bodies want that letting go, that trance dance, somewhere in our DNA a memory of what such things can give us but a disco is filled with spirits that we perhaps should not be open to.... ~ All my relations ~ Jonina p.s.
