A week ago our local news stations reported on a rally APS teachers had to talk about the changes in Education for students and teachers. They followed this story with an interview with teachers at a local charter school. Teachers gave testimony to how much they love the Common Core and new evaluations, which they have been participating in for a while. They boasted about having 100% of their students reading at grade level. WOW, I thought and then I started to think of some questions Id like to ask them. What is the ratio of students to teacher? How many children with disabilities in each class? What percentage of your population qualifies for free and reduced lunch? What type of outreach to the community projects does your school do? My list could go on! The point is that I worry about the IMPACT these reforms are going to have on our states children. NM has a high population of homeless students and is one of the top 10 POOREST states in the nation. What will happen to the children that cant afford or arent accepted into the charter schools? Before NM moves forward with this nationwide reform I feel that questions need to be asked and answered? Who are the powers that be and the most important question, have you EVER spent a significant amount of time in a classroom? NM residents do you have any questions?
