A week or so before “Eid Elad’ha” of last year, I went to the Bank to withdraw some money in preparation for the Eid. That branch was unusually crowded and I spotted few of my fellow college members. These were mostly junior non-academic staff. I came to know that the ATM cards of all university employees had expired on the same date and the Bank did not re-issue the new cards yet; hence, the rush by employees to collect their wages from the bank instead. The chaos resulting from the sheer large number of people in the bank meant that the names of people would be announced together with the amount they will get, i.e. their salary to be exact. Banker:” Name1..., 231 pounds” Banker:”Name2... 194 pounds” Banker:”Name3... 403 pounds” etc, etc I was dismayed, sad and disappointed to come to know how low the wages of my colleagues were. The coming week would be the Eid and this is all what these people are getting!! Is that real? These people are the backbone of our faculty; they do the most important jobs for the faculty and for the students. I invented an excuse and left the bank, wondering how these people and their families will face the Eid? Now it is the Eid approaching again and the conditions are even worse than before... 07/Oct/2013
