A weekend with the RetroN 5: Its a little hard to believe that units finally arrived and went on sale. There is a new system getting attention mainly because we already have 100s of games for it. ISSUE #1: POWER ON you have to HOLD the power button for about 5 seconds (or until anything lights up) to turn it on. FAMICOM & SUPER FAMICOM games work great with out issues, i am looking forward to testing more MegaDrive games over the next week. ISSUE #2: Cheat Codes require you to have an SD card installed and a specific file installed containing the codes. Like most emulators you have to supply the cheat code text tile for use them. Support for codes is built in bit the actual codes are not. GAMEBOY & GAMEBOY ADVANCED is where you see the effect of trying to upscale a very low resolution game into high definition. I personally turn off the feature that enlarges the screen size for any game with alot of action. Pokemon & RPS games are still pretty good with either option. Overall impressions are good, i am very much enjoying the RetroN 5 system. It is not a replacement for my official hardware but it definitely brings a level of features and simplicity that is missing from these system manufactured over 20 years ago. Is it perfect? no, every system will have its quarks. So far there are no games in my collection that do not work, while online people post that some issues with homebrew carts and I am also reading that Sonic & Knuckles cartridge does work with out an add-on on carts it will just load to a black screen when you combine the sonic cartridges with it. I am sure more issues will arise but thankfully the system is up-datable. If you want to personally check if one of your games works we are having a launch party on June 20th. You can bring it into the store and we can test it in an actual RetroN 5 unit.
