: A weird but perhaps less exceptional situation in physics than people imagine. Cold fusion, after initial great enthusiasm -- because it would, if working, resolve all of humans energy problems in a clean and sustainable way -- was rapidly classified as not existing. But a small group of physicist remained convinced, and kept working on it. They received little support from the branch of famous powerful physicists. Except for Brian Josephson, physicist at Cambridge University, Nobel prize physics for his invention of the Josephson effect (Josephson junction) -- he identified this quantum mechanical effect, used all over now in many techniques, when he was a graduate student, so no doubt that Josephson is a brilliant mind. However, he is also un-conventional in many ways, hence also in his open support of cold fusion, and his belief that cold fusion really works.
