A while back I promised to put up a tutorial for tech-nervous folk about using one of the new security keys from Yubico to add an extra layer of security to your google accounts. This hardware key is supported by a wide swath of corporations out there and hopefully more and more will jump on the bandwagon soon. The idea is that it is a small USB device you can keep on your key-ring. It is a 2nd factor authentication device. Meaning it is unique and when you log in to a system that supports it (google currently), the device will ask you to plug in your key to verify that you also have the physical device. Hence someone stealing your username and password still cannot log in to your google accounts. Anyway, I was going to post a tutorial about how to set it up, but it turned out to be dead simple. And someone put up a video (I think from Yubico) that details it quite well. The keys are available from amazon for under $20 each. Its the Yubico U2F FIDO key. Secure, pretty much dead easy to use, but really nice given how many security breaches were seeing. And think about how many stuff you may have floating around in your google accounts if you use gmail, for instance. The google drive files, information about your location often stored in the account (maps, etc.).
