A while back I sent our Senator Coats an email asking him to do anything is his power to bring about reasonable campaign finance reform, and in particular, to find a way to protect our democracy from the horrible consequences of the Citizens United ruling by SCOTUS. This is the response I received from Sen. Coats: Dear Kent: Thank you for contacting me regarding the Senates recent vote on a joint resolution (S.J.Res19) proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to contributions and expenditures intended to affect elections. I appreciate the opportunity to respond. On September 11, 2014, the Senate failed to end debate on S.J.Res.19 by a vote of 54-42, short of the 60 votes needed. I voted against this proposed constitutional amendment because I believe that it infringes upon the First Amendments guarantee of freedom of speech. The proposed amendment would allow Congress to shut down campaign commercials or censor campaign literature in any format, which would threaten the power of all citizens to make their voices heard and would clearly violate their constitutional rights. The Supreme Court has ruled on several occasions that campaign finance law must respect freedom of speech. I believe that this freedom is a core American principle and have always fought to preserve the First Amendment. WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP.
