A while back, largely as a result of the Share an Idea project, it was decided that there should be a park in the central city on the banks of the Avon. Subsequent events didnt always seem compatible with this decision. Of course, quite a lot of the area that would be included in this plan was already parks anyway, but the most obvious exception was theTown Hall. Although the area by the back entrance is attractive, and quite suitable for inclusion in a park, if you try to walk along the riverbank on that side of the river the Town Hall gets in the way. You could walk through it, but then you end up on Kilmore St, which is quite un - parklike. I therefore assumed that having this park along the river would automatically imply demolishing the Town Hall, but the council have decided to save it. Admittedly, their main concern is saving the auditorium, so its possible that the part thats right on the riverbank may still be demolished. The Central City Development Unit also seems quite unaware of the wish for this park. Victoria Square, although its called a square, is sufficiently parklike that it coulld qualify to be left as it is. Instead the CCDU want to replace it with a rectangle with sides paralell to the roads, which would sort of link it to the roads rather than the river. At first I thought this was a feeble attempt to imitate a rugby field, but then I heard that they arent having grass there. So the idea seems to be to replace a park with a carpark. It might not be called a carpark, or used as a carpark, but the intention is clearly to make it look like a carpark. What is needed there is something that looks like a park, not a carpark.
