A whole lot of swami v. & netaji (sentence cases intended) popped up from jan 12-23 and amazing posts were found bow down to vivekananda who showed the world who we hindus are ....and..... salute to the great hero who showed the courage to fight back.. Confusions arise due to ignorance, not always by common people but also for unreasonable exaggerations by parsimonious social institutions. A quick look where and how these labels doesnt go with either of them. “Religion was never preached by planners” - glories lost in ambivalent communications, misinterpreted: Swami Vivekananda’s purpose of talking Bhakti-Yogi was not a mere audition of elucidating Hinduism or to preserve and protect heritage. The greater cause was to revive the strength of human mind, that a real test of a leader lies in believing he is born for it, that holding different people together along the lines of common sympathy is the only challenge. However, the road taken was that of religion. “Man does not manufacture God out of his own brain; but he can only see God in the light of his own capacity, and he attributes to Him the best of all he knows.” [Reference: Complete works of Swami Vivekananda Volume VII, S.E.Waldo] Post-Swamiji, every core/authentic, allied and unrelated religious institutions started to garland his image by creating a feel of God man in a real-time environment of mantras, bhajans, pujans without recognizing that non-Hindu sections could lack nerves in entering into non-cognitive “hindu type” sabhas, successors lacked innocence to show inter-religious fairness which gradually turned everything into a HINDU cockpit altogether! Swamiji’s ideology now stands contracted as “carrying Hinduism to the world”. “I shall lead you to victory and freedom” – not a mere fighter, a Prince among patriots of THE INDIAN STRUGGLE Following were never taught in history classes of independent India, you read, you risk! Netaji never preferred violence yet he was not in sync with Gandhi which made him sound anti-Congress. Netaji’s stupendous thinking rose above the panorama of Congress-Gandhi-British-Swadesh-Hingsa-Shanti. All of Gandhi-Irwin pact, post-NWFP Hindu-Muslim riots, Bhagat Singh-Sukhdev trials and Dhaka riots after Chittagong armory raid created a canvas from which only Netaji understood the bigger picture. Occurred several times in political history of India known till date, continuous re-grouping among religion-based leaders, minority leaders and feudal royals made any logic of Gandhi’s unified movement sound hollow. Three basic features of that era was clear to him – one, that Indians won’t ever unify for a revolution if the doctrines of military is not put to practice, you cannot expect somebody to work, cook food and simultaneously fight for freedom, two, Indians suffered from myopia of what “freedom” exactly is, most felt it is a freedom from what they don’t like in their socio-personal lives which triggered number of riots and local fiefdom, three, Hitler’s anti-British views were just a hoax to beat USSR and British’s unresponsiveness has made him go crazy which is again temporary, and none knew better than Netaji that both Hitler and Mussolini had strange turn-off for Gandhi and preferred British to continue colonial hegemony. Four other political delineations are significant to understand Netaji truly, and why we must let him rise above petty titles of being merely called a “forgotten hero” or a “courageous fighter”. Netaji’s Economic Planning First, Netaji’s true political Guru was Chittaranjan Das and not Gandhi. He knew how political liberation is different from social liberation. Unlike Gandhi who dictated abhorrence to wealth for social equality, Netaji understood the whims of socio-religious-political fundamentalism and predominance of orthodox with commendable proficiency and that it is only through economic planning that India could shape up. Knowing British: Netaji Second, against a popular belief that Gandhi & Netaji were rivals, Netaji countered Gandhi only on the fact that British cannot be believed in lieu of international scenario prevailing all over the world. Gandhi tried ranking evil and by showing support to less harmful British imperialism fighting greater evils like Nazi and Fascists. Netaji disowned such idea. Gandhi tried putting back Netaji to power in 1937 but Netaji’s determination for formulating Federation Plan under newly formed Planning Committee made Gandhi isolate him in 1939. Tagore tried diffusing the confrontation but Netaji had that perfect understanding of the importance of robust politik. Significance of Hindu-Muslim unity & Netaji Third, the future of unified (or undivided) India was in hands of three: Jinnah, Gandhi and Netaji which got marred after 1939-40. That decade saw Hindu-Muslim rivalry to a great extent as Jinnah proposed minor demands of constitutional guarantees in certain regions which were negotiable. Jinnah said if Netaji stayed at the helm of Congress, dialogues can be re-opened; else demand for Pakistan will be retained. Gandhi truly misinterpreted British and their dirty intentions. When in 1940s, the entire country was under siege of communal violence and he had to run from Patna to Noakhali via Calcutta, his ahimsa followers were busy meeting Mountbatten in Delhi and VP Menon was found drafting partition deed at Shimla. Later in 1947, Sarat Bose, Netaji’s elder brother met Gandhi and prayed “no partition please” on which he replied “People say Sardar Patel is my yes-man, but now he is my no-man…and Jawaharlal, the less said, the better!” Netaji’s forecasts of India’s foreign policy Last, studying the actions (or inactions) of Nehru will be interesting. In Calcutta Congress, all of Nehru, Gandhi and Netaji reached consensus but in Lahore Congress, there was a rift as Nehru supported Gandhi’s proposition over Netaji. Nehru was more inclined to Gandhi if anything were to be decided on the future of India. This was probably because he needed guidance to shape future for him as well. On the other hand in 1939, when Netaji was ‘essentially lonely’ in congress, Nehru went uncomfortable with idea of international relations as Netaji was positive in seeking help from Nazism and Fascism. Later, Netaji replied to Nehru “Now what is your foreign policy, pray? Frothy sentiments and pious platitudes do not make foreign policy. It is no use championing lost cause all the time and it is no use condemning countries like Germany and Italy on the one hand and on the other, giving a certificate of good conduct to British and French imperialism.” Antagonized tremendously, Nehru publically declared to fight Japanese soldiers, even Netaji. Surprisingly, two decades later it was Nehru who advocated favor to INA officers in Red Fort trials. Gimmick? Populism? No answer.. Nobody truly understood the marvel in Netaji and turned unnecessarily hostile to his political excellence. He is not only an insignia of daring audacity and military formulation; he was one of the finest intellects India ever produced with a superior demeanor and a distinctive singularity. His view of liberation was achieving “Samya”, thus adding humanitarian and egalitarian aspects to the synthesis of national integrity. In today’s India, Netaji is just a mere revolutionary who is paid a state tribute with Facebook posts immortalizing only a fragment of his persona “how he fought back”. Sad, guys!
