A woman called out that it was a child lying in the road. I stepped into the street to check on her and as I reached her she got up and came over to me. My wife estimated her to be about 3. I gave her a hug and marched her to the sidewalk. Her siblings came rushing over followed by her mom. They whisked her away to the SUV that stopped in the middle of the street. I found myself back in the middle of the street blocking traffic until they were all loaded aboard. Two things amazed me. First the resiliency of little girls when taking a bad fall. If I took a splat like that I would still be splatted. Second was color. The little girl was black and the reactors and responders were white. The color of the little girl did not matter. There was the proverbial jerk with his little girls who made some comment but it had to do more with class than race.
