A woman in her 90s was targeted by a distraction burglar in Oldham. Between 4pm and 5pm on Tuesday 10 June 2014 a woman in her 90s was woken by someone tapping on the window and front door of her house on Tanhill Lane. She answered the door and a man told her he had come to check the water. She let him in and went to the kitchen. He turned the taps on and told her to stay in the kitchen while he left the room. A few minutes later he shouted that she could turn the taps off and he left. The 93-year-old woman then discovered her bedroom had been ransacked although nothing is known to have been stolen. The offender is described as having dark skin, aged between 20 and 30-years-old and around 5ft 6in to 5ft8in tall. He had smart jet black hair and was wearing a navy or dark coloured tracksuit with large lettering on the chest. Police are appealing for information and witnesses. Detective Constable Kate Dawson said: “It doesn’t look like anything was taken but it is clear the man had used the excuse of checking the water to get into this vulnerable woman’s house in attempt to steal from her. “We would remind people to be vigilant when someone you do not know calls unexpectedly at your home. Always ask for identification for someone claiming to be from a company and if you are still unsure ask them to call back at a time when you can have a family member or friend with you. Any reputable company would be happy to arrange an appointment at a time that suits you.” Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 9063 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
