A word about fostering Often times, the most overlook aspect of rescue and volunteerism is foster, which is sad because this is probably one of the most helpful aspects of volunteering (except for fundraising and donations). Volunteers who will agree to foster our rescues provide such a strong assistance to us and the rescued animal, it helps with social skills building, house training, and helping the dog adjust to life in a family. Many of our placement partners in northern and western states need the dogs (due to transport laws) out of the shelter for a minimum of 2 weeks prior to transport, some foster times prior to transport last as long as 4 weeks. We also have dogs and cats needing medical care outside of the facility and fosters could be a huge assist for us in that regard. A quiet room, with basic nurturing is often times a life saver for these sweet animals. We would never ask someone to foster an animal that was contagious or place a family in a precarious situation with fostering while on the mend, but in instances like heartworm treatment or the cat we recently took in with a leg amputation – these animals could greatly use being in a foster home rather than shelter situation. People are hesitant to offer up fostering because they are scared the event would be too heartbreaking to give up an animal they bonded with. And we understand that fear, however after a few fosters get under your belt, you quickly realize how heart WARMING the gift of foster becomes. To see an animal get a chance to finally become a member of a family because YOU gave that animal the extra step up it needed to become adopted. Fostering saves lives, fostering is rewarding and fostering is a great way to volunteer in rescue. We provide the medical care, the foster provides the food, home and the love. Won’t you consider volunteering with ARF by opening your heart and your home? Contact us at [email protected] for further information regarding fostering.
