A word from the Word September 3 - - - THE POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK Luke 15:1-2 1 Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. It all began with a muttering. The Pharisees and the teachers were murmuring about Jesus and His choice of friends. The Greek word for murmuring here means to complain and to grumble aloud. They were judging Jesus on the basis of the company he was keeping. It says that the tax collectors and sinners were gathered around Jesus. Jesus was not only in their company but it says that he was having fellowship with them by sharing a meal. Now a Tax collector was considered to be a traitor because they were Jewish men that worked for the hated Roman oppressors. Tax collectors often collected more than they were required to collect. They became very wealthy and the one from whom they collected the taxes became very poor. I can understand to a point what the Pharisee’s were saying. They were saying you can tell a person by the company he keeps. But what they didn’t understand was the men they were complaining about, as being undesirable were no worse than they. It says in the book of Romans 3:23 “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. So the tax collectors, sinners, and the Pharisees were also in need of salvation. This was a simple case of THE POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK- - - What can we learn from this? ------------ Pray for our Churches. If revival is going to come it will come through the believer. Pray that strained or broken relationships, among families and friends as well as acquaintances, will be restored.
