A write up on state as a tourist destination reminded me of this piece I had written two and half years back for a magazine (academic). Happy reading people! A story goes on to say when God decided to distribute gifts to the people of India, the first one to approach God was a person from South, God gave him “Intelligence” as a gift, then came one from the West who received “Wealth” as a gift. Northern people got “Beauty” and East got “Simplicity” as a gift. The person from North-East sat quietly; God asked, “What do you want as a gift my child?” He replied gently “Gift! God, am I getting a gift too?” God replied “Yes, I have a gift for you as well”. Since all the gifts had already been taken, God went into deep contemplation and decided to give North-East a little bit of “Beauty” from the North, a bit of “Simplicity” from the East and a special gift for God’s special child “Innocence”. Ever since, the people of North-East are known for its beauty, simplicity and innocence. This very beauty, simplicity and innocence have been carried to be the hall mark of Arunachal Pradesh, the land of rising sun, gorgeous waterfalls, gurgling brooks and raging rivers. God must have been very pleased with the people as we see the first ray of sun in Indian soil kissing the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. Evidently so much is spoken about its purity, because it is the place where sage Parashuram washed away his sins after committing matricide and sage Vyasa who wrote Mahabharata meditated. To get the most out of a state unexplored, one need to just open their minds and enjoy being in Arunachal, soak in the beauty of nature by being one. The state is known to be the largest in Northeast. It is comprised of 17 districts and 26 major tribes and many sub-tribes. It is home to magnificent orchid blooms, lush greeneries, rare species of flora and fauna. It is a complete package for nature lovers and culture connoisseurs. The first thing a traveller would notice is the aura of a tribal belt, culturally rich like any other seven sisters, seemingly a region painted with bright and light colours. The primary colours are so precisely used to design the State. This is also why major traditional attires of the tribes are light and bright in colours. For instance the Galos have complete white colour dominant in their traditional attire, Adis draw on bright red colour in their traditional attire, Nyishi uses cream white and red colour, Red, white and black defines Wancho traditional attire, Monpa’s use red, white, blue and black and so on making the state even more vibrant and exquisite. Wonderfully connected, the calm colours of the attires also indicate the hospitable nature of the people. Hospitality is one of the most talked about fact, which is why the people manage to survive in every educational and corporate institute in any part of the country. One of their interesting characteristics is that they are not clannish, adaptable and loves interacting with others. Another noticeable fact is, they can speak good Hindi in comparison to other seven sisters, which again adds to their friendly attitude. The state is replete with interesting stories and myths which signifies the creativity of the inhabitants. There are stories of earth and sky spoken of as lovers, rainbow being used as a ladder for God to meet his wife on the moon. The region has a mention in the Mahabharata and Kalika Puranas, King Bhismika founded his kingdom and Lord Krishna married to Rukmini who was from the region. Malinithan, Rukmini Nagar, Tawang Monastery, Parsuram Kund are some of the religious places of interest. On a visit to this picturesque state, what one may not witness for sure is the din and dust of the cities. Yet another fact unique to the state is the absence of beggars in the streets. People are hard working, productive and self sufficient. What more can be spoken of than to be contend and proud of a state that considers itself more Indian than any other Indians.
