A writing project Im working on Part I: There had been plenty of talk of freeing the slaves when Lincoln McNeal was 15 years old. By then, he had already inherited two plantations in the Blackbelt. He never understood what the Presidents Emancipation Proclamation was about - he grew up with about 1/3 of his slaves and included them in nearly all of his activities. He took care that his slaves were well fed and well clothed. He had a will drawn up at an early age that named his slaves as family members and left each of them land to inherit. It was a long standing tradition in his family. His sister Madison McNeal was filled with anger and rage since the day of her birth a complete contrast from the laid back brother of hers. When Madison screamed as a baby her father Easton escaped to his many stills. He was known to be the smartest businessman in the south and he swore even on his deathbed his recipe and preparation of the sour whiskey mash and moonshine would be six feet under with him. If a man had no money, hed barter for a strong stallion and somehow the stars of the universe aligned for this wicked mean drunk man.-S.Long
