A year ago I went on an emotional roller coaster ride trying to save a little dog and many of you chose to join me. A pitiful little Bichon Frise named Tucker was on “death row” in the New York Animal Care and Control in Brooklyn. We came together online – here on Facebook – and worked hard to pull him from death row (with the help of one special person in NYC) only to realize that he was terribly sick. A quick visit to the ER of a Manhattan animal hospital and a shocking estimate of thousands of dollars to attempt to save him followed. I was very worried about his poor odds as well as the sizeable amount of money. You, my Facebook family of friends from all over the globe, rushed in with offers of help and in the space of just a few days we raised more than $3,000 for Tucker. I was overwhelmed by your kind hearts and your generosity but even that was not enough to save the little guy. Still, his final hours were spent in the hands of caring and compassionate people and he did not die alone and uncared for in a concrete cell. Even now I’m amazed at your kindness, your generosity, and your willingness to move heaven and earth on behalf of a neglected and abandoned dog. More than that, you refused to let me fight for Tucker all by myself and you walked alongside me every step of the way. I was surprised this past week at how raw I still feel about losing little Tucker, a dog I never laid eyes on in real life. It still breaks my heart that we couldn’t get him out in time to save him but that sadness is always – always – overshadowed by the memory of this amazing group of friends and family on Facebook. There are many, many good animal rescue groups doing important work on behalf of animals like Tucker. If you haven’t donated to an animal rescue group lately, why not send them a little love in the form of a donation in memory of Tucker. There are still so very many animals just like Tucker, waiting for our help. I hope you always remember the amazing things we can do when we work together. Love, Barbara My friend Kelly Galligan was the one in NYC who pulled every string imaginable to spring Tucker from death row and thats her holding Tucker in the cab on his ride to freedom.
